A brief description of the institution’s methodology for evaluating employee satisfaction and engagement:

In collaboration with ModernThink LLC, an independent management consulting firm focused on workplace quality in higher education, the College of Charleston administered a Workplace & Campus Culture survey in 2019.

The survey included 60 statements on a 5-point agreement scale, 16 additional statements on a 5-point agreement scale, 28 benefit satisfaction questions on a 5-point satisfaction scale, three open-ended questions and five self-selected demographic questions.

Nearly 1,000 employees responded, yielding an overall response rate of 47 percent. ModernThink and senior leadership later hosted a Town Hall on January 10, 2020 to review survey results and discuss the institution's next steps. ModernThink made five recommendations, ranging from improving communications, streamlining and shoring up performance management processes, and fostering trust (particularly in employees' relationships with senior leadership).

Additionally, ModernThink's methodology and report mirrors the work of one of the Strategic Plan working groups on employee success, which is meeting now.
