This credit was marked as Not Applicable for the following reason:

Attached is Colgate's Program for Animal Care which discusses explicitly working to minimize distress. For additional context, there are various regulations about different tiers of pain/distress that Colgate is bound to follow (per state and federal guidelines and in particular the USDA Animal Welfare Act which defines categories of pain/distress), and as a case in point, there are standards for minimal pain/distress, for pain/distress that is relieved by appropriate anesthetic/analgesic, and separately for extreme pain/distress or that is not relieved, all of which Colgate must follow.

Colgate's IACUC (and investigator proposing such work) has an obligation (in federal and state regulation) to provide an incredibly specific scientific justification for such work and why along with extremely careful oversight of any such work. In practice, Colgate does not have any currently running (nor any in recent history) experiments that would fall into this category, and our IACUC carefully considers any experiments that involve ANY pain or distress relative to the scientific merits and has declined to approve protocols that do not appropriately justify and manage pain.
