A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Colgate University has a comprehensive and holistic wellness program encompassing emotional, environmental, intellectual, multicultural, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual wellbeing.

This program has allowed interns from the Office of Sustainability to offer a "Foundations of Sustainability" discussion course for P.E. Credit. This interactive course began in the fall of 2016. Students meet once a week for five weeks and focus on understanding the three pillars of sustainability: social, economic and the environmental. The first week of the course focuses on the science of climate change. The second week covers issues with the material economy and consumerism. The third week focuses on Environmental Justice. The fourth week covers food, its process from farm or factory to the table and its impact on people and the environment. In the fifth week, students discuss solutions and think about their own sustainability goals.

Students associated with the Sustainability Office and/or Community Garden who display strong communication and presentation skills, as well as a deep understanding of sustainability-related issues, are selected by the Program Coordinator to facilitate this discussion course.

In addition to the typical Sustainability Office Intern and Community Garden Intern trainings (see above for Sustainability Intern Trainings), the facilitators for this course complete a one-hour training focused on facilitation techniques, and meet on a weekly basis to develop facilitation skills, work on curriculum and assess the needs of the group.

Facilitators are paid through the Office of Sustainability, typically through the Sustainability and Climate Action Planning Fund.
