The State of Maine has a program for all colleges, universities and large quantity hazardous waste generators that regulates hazardous waste, universal waste and non-regulated chemical waste disposal and requires these institutions to have a waste reduction plan. Under Federal rules, Colby would be classified as an exempt small quantity hazardous waste generator; however, the State of Maine rules for Hazardous Waste classification and management are more stringent and the College is classified as a large quantity hazardous waste generator.

Colby adheres to the State of ME environmental regulations for the disposal of hazardous, universal & chemical waste. The State of ME environmental regulations are significantly more stringent than federal regulations for these items. See website URLs below for regulations Colby follows for waste disposal.
