A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive experience(s) offered by the institution:

ES/BIO 358J Ecological Field Study
In this course offered during January term, students study the biological diversity and ecological relationships among the fauna and flora of selected tropical ecosystems in Belize. Students perform qualitative and quantitative field investigations of the ecology of coral reefs and tropical rainforests and of the environmental challenges impacting these ecosystems. Students learn to identify flora and vertebrate fauna indigenous to the area; the culture and environmental ethic of Kekchi and Mayan Indian villages is studied and discussed. Sustainability practices in resource-limited environments are investigated. There is extensive discussion of resource availability, utilization, and exploitation with a focus on the limited availability of water, food, and power. Students live in field stations and must live within the constraints of their limited resources. Lectures, films, and discussions of assigned readings during the first week are followed by a 20-day field trip in Belize.
