Campus Salvage
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Campus Salvage is Coastal Carolina University's annual collection and donation program designed to divert unwanted items from the landfill when residential students move-out at the end of the year. The project is a collaborative effort between the offices of Sustain Coastal, University Housing, and Public Safety. Each Spring, during move-out week, students living in residence halls on campus and University Place filled 20+ PODS with items acquired while living on-campus. The items collected include clothing, shoes, non-perishable items, cleaning products, paper products, school supplies, household items, electronics, furniture, accessories, jewelry and more.
The week after students move out, Sustain Coastal staff collect, sort and organize the items. Items that are not sold as part of Campus Salvage (e.g. clothing, bedding, non-perishable food, paper products) are donated to local organizations. Last Spring's collection efforts resulted in donations to 13 different local organizations ranging from Fostering Hope and Sea Haven for Youth to the Helping Hand and Churches Assisting People.
Through Campus Salvage, the following items were donated to local organizations:
1. Community Kitchen in Myrtle Beach – 4 boxes of food and brooms
2. Fostering Hope of Conway – 10 bags of clothes, 6 bags of bedding, brooms, and mops
3. Grand Strand Humane Society- 8 bags of towels and blankets, mops and brooms
4. Goodwill – 68 bags of clothes and 23 bags of bedding
5. Horry County Animal Care Center – 9 bags of towels and blankets, brooms and mops
6. Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach – 6 bags of blankets and towels, and brooms
7. Low Country Kitchen: 4 boxes of food and brooms
8. North Strand Housing Shelter – 6 bags of bedding, 4 boxes of cleaning and hygiene products, mops, and brooms
9. Salvation Army in Conway – 13 bags of clothing
10. Sea Haven for Youth in Myrtle Beach – 12 bags of clothes, 5 bags of bedding, and brooms
11. Shepherd’s Table – 4 boxes of food, 3 boxes of cleaning supplies, and water
12. Waccamaw Youth Center – 12 bags of clothes, 5 bags of bedding, and brooms
13. W.A.R.M Rescue - brooms
At the 2022 sale, Campus Salvage raised $4,529 that will go towards a sustainability scholarship for CCU students that exhibit sustainable behavior. The sale itself had 22 PODS full of items at the sale. Most items were priced at $1, with the exception of mini refrigerators, small appliances, and furniture.
Overall, Campus Salvage is a chance to give items a second life without them going into our local landfill and is also an amazing opportunity to give back to the local community. It is a tradition that people within our community look forward to every year.
