A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The assessment was developed, with permission from OSU's ESS Lab, and is based on the Assessment of Sustainability Knowledge (ASK) Scale. This survey includes a sampling of questions from the ASK scale, some of which were adapted to best fit the CCU community and broader sustainability objectives of the institution. The information gained from this survey will inform educational outreach for the Spring 2023 semester.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The Sustainability Literacy Assessment was distributed electronically in Fall 2022 by Institutional Research, Assessment and Analysis at the request of Sustain Coastal. This survey was administered online in two ways: via restricted invitation links (only those receiving a link can access the survey, and only one time per link) to a 33% sample of all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Fall 2022 semester, and via an open link promoted by Sustain Coastal.
Those who opted in and provided contact information (name and/or email address) from either survey version were entered into a pool of eligible respondents to win one of four $50 CINO gift certificates. The randomly selected winners are listed at the end of the survey report.
The survey will also be administered again at the end of the Spring semester (April 17 - April 28, 2023) to see if efforts throughout the semester help to increase awareness and literacy.

A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
Responses from the survey indicate that students are generally aware of the definition sustainability. When asked about which of the following components are included in a comprehensive definition of sustainability, the environmental component was selected by almost all students, followed by economic and then social.
When asked about environmental challenges, such as effects of global climate change, most students are aware of the potential effects, though there seems to be some opportunity to increase education efforts about renewable energy resources, and ways to reduce global emissions.
