Zero Waste Football

A brief description of the campaign:

Zero Waste Football is a campaign driven by Sustain Coastal. Sustain Coastal student staff and volunteers work during each home football game to divert waste from landfill. In an effort to increase the amount of waste diverted at home football games, Coastal Carolina University integrated recycling and composting at all home football games starting in 2019. There are now 32 zero waste stations throughout Brooks Stadium.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Coastal Carolina University diverted 65% of the waste created inside Brooks Stadium during the 2019 home football season. This was up from just 10% in the previous season. Not only is more waste being diverted from landfill, but we are using football games as a platform for educating the community about composting and recycling efforts. Zero Waste football continued in the 2020 season and is now a staple of football at Coastal Carolina University.

Mini-Bin Program

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

In July 2019 Coastal Carolina University launched a mandatory recycling program in all offices on campus. This program removed 1,500 individual office trash cans and replaced them with a deskside recycling bin and small trash can. The practice of emptying trash cans in office spaces daily was ended, as participants were asked to start sorting their waste and take it to centralized recycling stations. This program had 3 main goals: increase recycling, reduce waste, and make campus cleaner. Our goals were to increase recycling participation by 25% or more, reduce plastic bag usage by up to 150,000 bags per year, and to have custodial staff focus on cleaning public areas more often.

In the first 18 months, we saw the following improvements as part of the program:

The program has seen incredible results in the first 18 months of the program. These results include: a 20% increase in recycling participation among faculty and staff, a 13% increase in awareness of waste created, and a reduction of over 100,000 plastic bags.
