Yes or No
Students Yes
Staff Yes
Faculty Yes
Administrators Yes

A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:

The cultural competence trainings and activities are available through Training and Development for faculty and staff, while available to students through Multi-Cultural Student Services. For faculty, staff, and students, programs are offered through a robust combination of community events and calendar activities including the cultural arts (link to cultural arts calendar - http://www.coastal.edu/news/culturalarts/).

In addition, we sponsor and organize briefings about different country environments through activities including the following:

International Education Week activities annually each November since 2010 (see: http://www.coastal.edu/newsarticles/print.php?id=3845 for the November 2014 program).

Country dining etiquette programs – Japan and China most recently (webpages since down, but offered through PDA program in cooperation with the College of Business)

International Cultural Series Speakers – E.g. Wendy Zou from Beijing Language and Culture University – offered in cooperation with Intel and Security Studies and the Wall College of Business (February 2015).

International Women’s Day Events (March 2 – 5, 2015)

Cooperative presentations and partnership with OLLI Lifelong Learning to have new scholarship for study abroad for CCU students and they must deliver a seminar on the country they visited and new insights derived from that event within 6 months of return (3 completed so far).

Annual Cultural Celebration events (cooperation Multicultural Student Services, OIPS and other campus organizations) are open to all faculty, staff, students, and administrators.

Chinese New Year celebration activities in cooperation with Aramark and other campus organizations each year.

Training offered through CeTEAL to help faculty understand international students, short-term study abroad program development (offered successfully in both Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 and will continue annually – available to faculty, staff, and administrators), teaching abroad interest session (Successful in Fall 2014), and likely will offer Fulbright development writing circle if adequate interest in May 2015 (See CeTEAL schedule for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015)
We also offer opportunity for CCU faculty to teach in China at partner institutions for a short-term (3 -4 weeks usually) – with most costs covered by Chinese institutions. This offers an opportunity to understand teaching and institutional environment in China and to transfer learning to students while back on campus, and/or crafting of cooperative intercultural programming activities (such as new short-term study abroad program proposed by Paul Olsen after teaching in Xi’an last year).

At least 9 short-term study abroad programs are available to students to participate in study abroad each year for 1 – 4 weeks, and over 12 different international partners offer semester or longer study abroad programs for our students.

We also offer international internships (paid and unpaid) for our students in partnerships between Career Services, OIPS, and the academic departments for students to use these opportunities to fulfill curricular requirements.

ILPP has organized Foreign Policy in February events series entitled, Great Decisions, beginning February 2015 which was open to the public and had filled house on all four Saturday events! A raging success – covering issues including: Sectarianism in the Middle East, Human Trafficking, Privacy in the Digital Age, and Russia and the Ukraine. This series will certainly be expanded for upcoming years and faculty, staff, students, and community participated. (website: http://www.coastal.edu/humanities/ilpp/index.html)

Faculty can participate in our annually funded (since 2010) Faculty Peer Mentoring for Study Abroad to be trained to be a study abroad program leader who is then empowered to develop and lead CCU study abroad programs to meet best practices in education abroad which are compliant with CCU policies (usually four are funded per year).

CCU will be bringing the SC Chapter of the Fulbright Association to CCU beginning in April 2015 (for hopefully what will be annual meetings) at which themes will be discussed regarding functioning in a globalized world.

Training is available on an as needed basis to administrators and faculty who are seeking to develop international programs and contracts through the Office of the Associate Provost for Global Initiatives and Office of International Programs and Services. (See Faculty Opportunities for this listing: http://www.coastal.edu/international/facultyresources/

Students can participate in many on-campus for-credit courses that provide cultural competence training (e.g., ANTH 102 & L (Understanding Other Cultures), CLC 320 Intercultural Communication in Society, CLC 350 Semiotics of Culture, CLC 410 Popular Culture in the World, ENGL 205 Literature and Culture, ENGL 231 Film, New Media, and Culture, ENGL 277 Literature Across Cultures, MGMT 461 Cross Cultural Management, among others in Spring alone).

All students must complete a Global Awareness course as a part of the mandatory core curriculum (Goal 5b) through an approved course or study abroad experience.

Students studying abroad or doing an internship are required to participate in INTL 398 which offers interactive discussions between the participants and CCU staff to explore cultural competence and reflect on personal growth as a result of that reflection.

CCU has recently begun to offer its first Alumni and Community International Travel Program (see: http://www.coastal.edu/international/alumniandcommunityinternationaltravel/) which will take place in May 2015 and will offer cultural and historic insights to World War I and World War II to students, faculty, staff, and community members participating.

CCU offers a Global Ambassador program into which talented international exchange students, and returning CCU study abroad participants are included to develop and conduct programming for CCU students and community about the importance of study abroad and cultural awareness.

OIPS initiated the first Intercultural Experience Community in Fall 2014 in cooperation with University Housing to bring together cultural conversations and growth among the participants. The program has been extraordinarily successful (Institutional Research collected that data) and is being expanded in 2015/16.
