The Division of University Engagement oversees three distinct yet interdependent outreach functions at Cleveland State University that equip students for these public roles: civic engagement, workplace engagement and inclusion and multicultural engagement. Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement encompass CSU's commitment to advancing diversity and equity in all its affairs, providing opportunities for all students to be successful and celebrating the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the campus community. Cleveland State University's Diversity Councils are assemblages of faculty, staff and external stakeholders who meet regularly to design, implement and monitor strategies that address diversity challenges and opportunities in each of the University’s colleges. Members are appointed by the respective Deans of the colleges and departments throughout the University. The President’s Council on Diversity advises the Chief Diversity Officer regarding all aspects of diversity applicable to the work of the University and its faculty, staff, students and administrators. Made up of senior administrators, faculty and students appointed by the President, it sets goals and priorities in accordance with the Diversity Action Plan, monitors progress towards those goals, and updates the Diversity Action Plan as needed.

Three out of the six leadership development programs for faculty and staff have a cultural competency component. Cleveland State has more than 100 diversity oriented courses. Both global and local challenges are part of a cultural/ethnic focus, including the human diversity general education requirement which requires all undergraduate majors to complete two courses in social diversity with a minimum of six credits in African-American courses and U.S. Diversity courses.
