Holiday Energy Saving Program

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
Prior to the winter holiday, faculty, staff and students were encouraged to consider energy conservation through a targeted email message and campaign. Since the university is closed for ten consecutive days over the holidays, building temperature set points are lowered in unoccupied buildings. This reduces consumption of steam, natural gas and electricity, thereby reducing utility costs and potentially saving the university thousands of dollars in energy bills, all while reducing our carbon emissions. Faculty and staff were encourages to assist in saving energy and emissions reductions through the following actions: Switch of all lights in your area. Turn off all non-essential office equipment including computers, monitors, printers and speakers. Turn off video displays and electronic signs in common areas. Close lab fume hoods.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Total electricity usage over the holiday period decreased 19% over a baseline consumption calculated by averaging usage from the preceding three weeks.

Cigarette Blitz

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):
The Student Environmental Movement coordinated a Cigarette Blitz in March 2017. The event was promoted to students and recurs at least once per semester.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The students collected 2430 butts on campus in the thirty minute Cigarette Blitz in an effort to prevent butts from entering the stormwater system. Additionally, the students run a campaign to educate the campus community about stormwater drains and conduct an annual event to stencil stormwater drains with the slogan, "Lake Erie Starts Here!"

Cleveland State University was selected as one of sixteen campus nationwide to host the Conscious Campus Road Tour on April 3, 2017. The Conscious Campus Road Tour is a seven week cross-country journey to sixteen school campuses across the United States. On each campus, Turning Green provides students with unique hands-on opportunities to mobilize around sustainable solutions on their campus. Each stop features a “Conscious Information Station” tabling event focused on six key lifestyle themes and a “Town Hall Meeting” to develop a collaborative student led initiative. Through educational resources, advocacy campaigns, and actionable projects, Turning Green sets the stage for students to spearhead a variety of environmental initiatives that scale impact.
