Has the institution adopted a policy prohibiting idling?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the policy:
The University has developed a "No-Idling Policy" for both private and campus vehicles in order to prevent excessive emissions, unnecessary human exposure to vehicle exhaust and to eliminate excessive energy consumption. The following policy was adapted for all Motor Pool vehicles:
• No vehicle should be left unattended or idling at a loading dock, delivery stop, or at other locations where exhaust emissions may enter an occupied building such as near building air intakes, entrances, or open windows, etc.
• Engines should be left running only as long as it takes to unload or load passengers.
• All vehicles should be turned off when not in transit.
The only anticipated exceptions to the above guideline(s) are:
• In the event of the use of a power lift-gate when the electrical system alone will not support its operation; such as in cold weather or low electrical supply conditions.
• In extreme winter weather situations where a vehicle not left idling would create an operational safety problem such as severe fogging or icing of the windows (personal comfort alone would not qualify for this exception).
• Snow removal operations
• For power take-off use.
• For emergency lighting.
