Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
This Summer Study Abroad program offers students the oppurtunity to study both Environmental Sustainability and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the iconic city of Pamplona, Spain. Instructors from Clemson University will team with local experts to deliver a world-class teaching experience related to addressing some of the global engineering challenges of the 21st Century.
This program blends in-class activities with field trips to wind/solar farms, recycling depots, and sustainable buildings. Topics include sustainable engineering and industrial ecology with emphasis on pollution prevention methods using source reduction, recycling assessments, treatment to reduce disposal, life-cycle assessment (LCA) and design for the environment. Emphasizes case studies.
The program will also provide an introduction to both Geographic Information Science (GIS) and the systems used to develop and answer questions unique to sustainability and the environment.
Based on cross-discipline experiences from the United States and the European Union, students will use GIS to gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability policies and practices and the political, cultural, environmental, and socio-economic factors that affect them.
Students will also gain hands-on experience in using the latest methodologies for bringing spatial thinking and analysis into their sustainability practices.
