Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Clarkson CEM Consulting Group (C3G) Aims to Increase Resilience and Sustainability of Neighboring Villages
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Clarkson Construction Engineering Management Program has in-house capability to provide pre-professional consulting in planning, engineering, and construction areas to support sustainable and resilient communities in the region. This enterprise, the Clarkson CEM Consulting Group or C3G, hires student interns in an experiential learning mode in order to deliver products to clients that would not otherwise be able to afford professional consulting services. These efforts help to build community economic opportunities by jump-starting projects by providing key preliminary work, data collection, or planning efforts.
One of C3G's primary business objectives is to support sustainable community development in our rural and economically struggling region. Given the range of services offered, the firm is "seeking to help the North Country/Adirondack region in its efforts to grow the economy, create jobs, and build communities that are sustainable, resilient, and ever increasingly attractive for continued growth and investment."
The partnerships between communities, C3G and student interns results in benefits for all. The students learn about community development, sustainability/resilience strategies, stakeholder engagement, project management and other real-world professional experiences. The communities get work done that would not have otherwise been accomplished, and the region becomes stronger and more resilient. Over the past 5 years, projects have ranged from improved pedestrian and bike-friendly transport routes through complete street initiatives; identification of safe pathways to encourage children to walk to school; water conservation through system leak detection, and accessibility assessments and recommended improvements to reduce barriers for people with mobility disabilities.
Aspects of this project/business opportunity overlap with several criteria (campus and community engagement, inclusion, sustainable infrastructure etc.). An innovation point is justified though due to the comprehensive nature in which this project covers many aspects of sustainability simultaneously in an integrated and thorough fashion that contributes to education and implementation.
Which of the following impact areas does the innovation most closely relate to? (select up to three):
Campus Engagement
Air & Climate
Sustainable Communities
