A brief description of when and why the workplace health and safety baseline was adopted:

Although FY2005 was used as the baseline for all STARS categories per requirements for previous STARS submission, we do not have these data for FY05. Thus, we used the oldest data we have, which are from FY08.

A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives:

There is a multitude of work and non-work related factors that influence a worker’s total health, including those related to safety. One of Clarkson's safety initiatives includes Ergonomic Awareness (or the scientific study people’s efficiency in their work environment) with the goal of reducing stress and eliminating injuries and disorders associated with the overuse of muscles, bad posture and repetitive tasks. This is accomplished by designing tasks, work spaces, controls, displays, tools, lighting and equipment to fit the employee´s physical capabilities and limitations (NIOSH). Fire Safety & Prevention: In 2011, there were 3,005 deaths, 17,500 injuries and $11,659 million dollars in losses as a result of 1,389,500 fires (NFPA). Fire deaths and injuries are preventable, therefore Clarkson trains students and employees in general fire safety precautions every semester (via fire drills) to help create a safer and more secure living and work environment for everyone. The entire campus is audited according to stringent standards associated with fire and workplace safety on an annual basis. CPR & First Aid Training is made available through one of several American Heart Association courses on CPR and first aid every semester. Clarkson University, like any other community, is vulnerable to a wide range of natural and man-made hazards. The University has a number of Emergency Preparedness programs in place to help prevent as well as respond to emergencies. All Safer and Healthier initiative events can be found on the Clarkson University Events Calendar.
