Sustainable Students Promoting Environmental Action Responsibility:
"SSPEAR is CMC's environmental club dedicated towards the defense of our natural environment and the advancement of sustainability. As a campus organization, we spread awareness of environmental issues, motivate the student body and campus services to live and operate more sustainably, and provide the resources to make these changes permanent."
We also employ EcoReps who promote environmentalism and conservation in the dorms; there are 4, one for each quad/area of the dorms

Gardens and Farms

SPEAR and the Garden Manager manage a garden of four large, raised planter beds on campus. They grow herbs and vegetables organically. An organic, farm-to-table event is hosted once a semester, using vegetables from the garden.

Student-Run Enterprises

The CMC Bike Shop is a student run initiative that helps CMC students, staff, and faculty become more mobile! All members of the CMC community are invited to rent bikes for free for a small rental period. Student staff are able to help patrons put together new bikes and fix bikes or longboards free of charge.

The CMC Sustainability Fund awards grants to student-led projects that improve the environmental sustainability at CMC in amounts up to $2,000 through a competitive Request for Proposal (RFP) process. These grants will provide students with the opportunity to pursue innovative and entrepreneurial ventures that increase sustainability and environmental awareness while also creating positive returns on investment. The Fund is sponsored by a $5,000 per semester grant from the President’s Fund at the Roberts Environmental Center.

The Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum provides a space for on campus speaker series. Speakers come from many different disciplines, including environmental studies. Examples: Environmental activist, Kyle Theirmann and Environmental artist, Yih Kah Hoe. Athenaeum employs students to to organize and determine speakers. The Athenaeum is utilized frequently, bringing multiple speakers per week.
The annual Green Careers Conference is conference held for students of the 5 Claremont Colleges to learn about the fields of sustainable and environmental careers. A keynote presentation and panel presentations by green industry leaders highlight the opportunities and challenges facing green jobs today in environmental law, consulting, nonprofits and corporate enterprise. Wilderness and Outdoors Programs

The consortium-wide OTL "On the Loose" outdoor initiative club trains its leaders with Leave No Trace principles, meaning all trips and outdoor programs under OTL operate under LNT morals. All OTL programs are entirely student run.

CMC runs the Outdoor Initiative (OI) that hosts 20-30 student-led trips to outdoor venues to raise awareness of nature and climate-related topics.

Educating for sustainability fulfills the mission of Claremont McKenna College to prepare future leaders. Coursework at CMC incorporates opportunities for students to learn about the concepts and principles surrounding complex critical global environmental issues. CMC provides opportunities to enhance learning and connects students with leadership and research applications. These include the Environmental Center, Environment, Economics, and Politics Major and Environmental Analysis major

The Robert's Environmental Center, as mentioned under the student run enterprise section, hirers students.
"Our work centers on analyzing and fostering corporate and organizational sustainability and ranges in scope from local businesses to multinational corporations and governments. We regularly publish research reports as well as work directly with organizations to improve their sustainability. The Center stresses student initiative and leadership, giving student employees ownership of projects and providing them with the tools to see them through."
Claremont McKenna College offers 14 internships per year to help expand Energy Efficiency, Demand Response, and Distributed Generation workforce development.
