The program seeks to reduce the amount of hazardous waste generated to the lowest practical quantity in order to conserve energy and natural resources through a program of effective waste minimization procedures (including recycling, reuse, product substitution, and treatment).
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
All hazardous chemical waste must be submitted to Env Health & Safety for proper handling and disposal. Determine whether the waste is hazardous, follow all safe handling rules and procedures stated in the SDS, Chemical Hygiene Plan,
CUNY Laboratory Safety Manual, and EPA Website, use personal protective equipment, utilize satellite accumulation areas. Ultimately Brooklyn College uses a vendor to safely and compliantly transport the waste to a Treatment facility for final disposal.

A brief description of any inventory system employed by the institution to facilitate the reuse or redistribution of laboratory chemicals:
Hazardous chemicals are required to be managed through an online database called ChemTracker. The system is jointly maintained between chemical owners, department representatives, and Env Health & Safety. The inventory includes a library of Safety Data Sheets (SDS). The exact location will be determined by each individual department.

Computers and electronic equipment contain multiple hazardous metals and must be managed and recycled through the Office of Property Management following CUNY's Disposal and Salvage Policy. All equipment must remain in a secure location until disposal.
