Yes

Description of the institution’s participation in sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions:

Christopher Newport University is a proud member of AASHE and PLAN, the Post Landfill Action Network.  Any individual with an @cnu.edu email address is able to create an account and access the resources provided by these sustainability networks.  These networks are advertised to interested individuals through our main sustainability website.


Has the institution formally shared its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions during the previous three years?:
No

Narrative outlining how the institution formally shares its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions:

Although CNU has not formally presented or authored an article to other institutions, we have shared top projects at the quarterly meeting for the Virginia chapter of AASHE. 


Does the institution have a sustainability-focused articulation/transfer agreement that provides students who are studying sustainability at one institution with a formal pathway to another institution?:
Yes

Description of institution’s sustainability-focused articulation/transfer agreements:

Approximately 70% of transfer students to CNU transfer from a Virginia Community College and there are many resources available to compare equivalent CNU courses to the Community College system.  For environmental studies, see the below program planning guide.

Has at least one individual with formal sustainability responsibilities at the institution served as a mentor or been mentored by a colleague with sustainability responsibilities at another institution during the previous three years?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s sustainability mentoring activities:

The Sustainability Specialist, Brian Kelley, has enrolled in a mentorship program with AASHE as a mentee and was paired with the Sustainability and Resilience Coordinator at Stetson University in Florida.  Having started the discussions in October 2024, monthly discussions will ensue monthly over the year to learn from one another and share best practices. 

In addition to the program, the Sustainability Specialist has attended the AASHE conference the last three years and has been developing relationships with individuals working in higher education sustainability.  Tours of and meeting sustainability individuals at other Virginia Universities has developed additional knowledge to help CNU's efforts.  Tours over the last three years included the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Washington and Lee, George Mason, University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University.    


Has at least one individual affiliated with the institution has served in a leadership role for an inter-campus sustainability network, conference, or community of practice during the previous three years?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s leadership roles in inter-campus collaboration:

The Sustainability Specialist, Brian Kelley, has enrolled in the AASHE Advisory Council, with orientation starting in January 2025.  With a focus on the Technical Committee of Operations, the purpose is to advise on STARS technical development related to advancing operational sustainability on campuses. It also provides occasional feedback on other AASHE programs and initiatives related to campus operations.
