5.1 Sustainability literacy assessment design and administration
Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of of the instruments/tools used to assess sustainability literacy:
We surveyed the CNU community (students, faculty, and staff) in spring 2021 (n = 908). We will deploy a similar survey in spring 2025.
The 52-question instrument assessed transportation and modality behaviors, sustainability literacy, knowledge of sustainability initiatives on campus, sustainability attitudes and beliefs, and general demographic information.
Description of the institution’s recent sustainability literacy assessment findings and any notable trends:
The general results from the survey showed a lack of sustainability literacy and a lack of knowledge or awareness of sustainability issues. In general, participants were in favor of more sustainable practices on campus.
Were academic staff engaged in sustainability education at the institution involved in developing and/or adopting the methodologies used to assess sustainability literacy?:
Description of the process through which academic staff were involved in developing and/or adopting the methodologies used to assess sustainability literacy:
CNU Office for Sustainability (OfS) and the Center for Sustainability in Education developed and distributed the survey with valuable input/guidance from Drs. Becky Bromely-Trujillo (POLS) and Brianna Lane (COMM) and James Duffy (‘21).
Are the literacy assessments designed and administered in such a way that the results can be used to evaluate the success of the institution’s sustainability education initiatives?:
Description of how the design and administration of the sustainability literacy assessments supports the evaluation of the success of the institution’s sustainability education initiatives:
We have baseline data from the spring 2021 survey that we can use to compare with the data we will get from the spring 2025 survey results. We can identify where the survey results align with the goals of CNU's Going Greener initiative.
The Reporting Tool will automatically calculate the following figure:
5.2 Percentage of students assessed for sustainability literacy
Description of the process used to measure or estimate the percentage of students assessed for sustainability literacy:
No assessment have been conducted over the last three years, but the next will be conducted in Spring 2025 and periodically after.
From the Spring 2021 survey, all students, faculty, and staff were emailed an anonymous link to complete the assessment. 376 students responded to the survey, which is about 8% of the undergraduate student population (n = 4768).
The Reporting Tool will automatically calculate the following figure:
