A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:
The Masters of Arts in Food Studies emphasizes a holistic approach to food systems providing intellectual and practical experience from field to table. Courses of study include agricultural and culinary history as well as sociological, cultural, political, economic, and geographic examinations of food production and consumption with four concentrations that span the food system, plus a dual degree M.A. in Food Studies + MBA opportunity. Students get involved with research opportunities with faculty and have placements with organizations during summer internships that provide real-world experience.

The Master of Sustainability (MSUS) program is a cohort-based program where students choose from five tracks to tailor the master's in sustainability education: Urban and Energy Systems, Ecology and Resource Management, Business and Innovation, Food Systems, and Policy and Economy. Students are able to draw on the ample resources of Eden Hall Campus (our sustainable living-learning laboratory) and of Pittsburgh, PA, through our professional network.

Students in the Food and Agriculture concentration gain theoretical understanding and hands-on experience with food and agriculture systems, innovations, and regulations.

Rachel Carson is our most distinguished alum, and in her honor we have built a concentration in Nature Writing. Students may choose from a plethora of literature courses focusing on the natural world including Ecofeminism, Wildness and Literature, Nature and Culture, Writing About Food, as well as a Nature Writing course. Students interested in nature projects have the opportunity to work at Chatham's Eden Hall Campus and serve on The Fourth River, our national journal devoted to nature and place-based writing.
