A brief description of the cultural competence trainings and activities:
At Chatham University, a series of Fall Diversity Awareness and Celebratory months were implemented to generate awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures, challenge stereotypical perceptions of diverse populations, and assist Chatham University in embracing the diversity of its campus community. In order to serve a diverse population and maintain inclusivity, each Diversity Awareness and Celebratory month had a planning committee comprised of faculty, staff, community members, and students. These committees were formed to discuss programs for various celebrations of cultures and diversity.
The following is a list of Diversity Awareness and Celebratory months for Spring 2015:
January: Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast and university service day
February: Black History Month
February-March: Women of Color Herstory Month
March: Women's History Month
May: Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish Heritage Month
In addition, staff, faculty, and administrators are required to completed online cultural competency trainings. This year's topics included workplace harassment, campus violence, and gender equity.
As part of our Global Focus program, we host events, lectures, and activities about cultural competence of the country/region of focus. Students and employees are welcome to join, and many of these activities are open to the community.
