A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation:
The academic component of Chapman University's most recent New Student Orientation focused on microfinance as a way to ignite and foster a sense of global citizenship among students. Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org, and Sasha Anderson, Chapman alumnus and International Program Coordinator for Campus Kiva, took part in New Student Orientation's Keynote Address. After learning about microfinance and its connection to alleviating poverty, students, in small groups, were given the opportunity to make a loan through Kiva to the individual of their choosing. In addition, every new student was offered a reusable bag, compostable disposable-ware was used for all catered meals, and over 140 students participated in a day of service to engage students in local community issues.
