Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Sustainability Certificate
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In Fall 2019 CWU launched a Sustainability Certificate, which offers students from any academic path an opportunity to develop an experiential, service-learning project that focusses on improving sustainability needs of the university or a community partner. The Sustainability Certificate was created to provide an avenue for students to gain enhanced problem-solving and communication skills to better prepare them for the workforce and growing market of sustainability related jobs. Courses in the Sustainability Certificate include SUST301 Introduction to Sustainability, which is focused on the principles of sustainability and development of a sustainability project proposal; SUST309 Sustainability Civic Engagement, during which students execute their sustainability project in collaboration with university or community stakeholders; and SUST487, the Sustainability Project Capstone, through which students communicate the results of their project and prepare for entering the workforce. Additionally, students take electives from each of three sustainability categories (Environment, Economy, Society).
