RecycleMania

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

RecycleMania (#CNMRecycle) is an 8-week, campus-wide, hands-on learning project centered on recycling in the Spring terms. It “is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.” It consists of weekly educational events, service learning projects, a national competition, a case study, and an educational Grande Finale. The Sustainability Curriculum Committee and the Physical Plant Department strive to provide sustainability education to CNM students.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

Less Contamination of Recyclables, evidenced by real data and winning the 2018 case study. 2019 results showed less contamination based on visual inspections as well.

Recycling Signage Campaign and Presentations

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

1) In light of the China Ban and other contamination issues on campus and the success of the recycling bin-reorganization in 2018 and 2019, it was determined that adding educational signage about waste/recycling with individual departmental outreach presentations was a must. The signage project will be complete on June 28, 2019 and the outreach will be ongoing through September 2019 (and annual ongoing brush-up training).

2) Additionally, During New Employee Orientation, a "Pledge to Refill" campaign is also hosted where employees pledge to refill their water bottles with a short demo on why this is important.


A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

1) Less contamination is expected as a result.
2) Pledge to refill has received 100s of signatures.

Water in the Desert. Hundreds of students participated in this event. Several students earned certificates. Several students no longer purchase bottled water.
