Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Pollinator Gardens
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Central Community College has had the privilege of offering students and community members access to pollinator gardens on each of our campuses. Much of the funding for these gardens has been provided by an ongoing partnership with the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Each campus garden features a multitude of flora, many emphasizing native Nebraskan plant species. The importance of these gardens is bolstered through community, staff and student education and outreach.
Each Fall, the Grand Island campus hosts the Pollinator Fest, offering children's activities, guest speakers, community programming, as well as food and music. Events like this and others are offered throughout the year in order to foster interest and retention of community support. Each campus is tasked with the upkeep of the gardens. Staff and students are encouraged to partake in planting, weeding, and general garden maintenance.
