Catawba College has photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors on nine campus buildings. The photovoltaic panels total 836 kilowatts (kW), of which 170 kW supply power to the campus microgrid. These panels produce 137,111 kWh subject to a net-metering arrangement with Duke Energy that transfers the associated renewable energy credits to Duke Energy. The remaining 666 kW are subject to a sell-all power purchase agreement.

As was noted above, we interpret this section as applying only to imported thermal energy. The College does not have any imported renewable thermal energy, but it does have on-site solar hot water serving five campus buildings and 16 on-site geothermal wells providing heating and cooling for multiple buildings. The College is completing the addition of 38 geothermal wells to heat and cool the library and chapel in Spring 2024.
