Has the institution conducted a GHG emissions inventory within the previous three years that includes all Scope 1 and 2 emissions? :
Yes

A copy of the most recent GHG emissions inventory:
A brief description of the methodology and/or tool used to complete the GHG emissions inventory:

Catawba College uses the Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform (SIMAP) for Greenhouse Gas Inventory calculations.

Has the GHG emissions inventory been validated internally by personnel who are independent of the GHG accounting and reporting process and/or verified by an independent, external third party?:
Yes

A brief description of the GHG inventory verification process:

Second Nature reviews GHG inventories submitted by the College through SIMAP to ensure the quality of the College's carbon neutrality claim.

Documentation to support the GHG inventory verification process:
---

Gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
Weight in MTCO2e
Stationary combustion 1,068.70 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources (mobile combustion, process emissions, fugitive emissions) 168.15 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 1 GHG emissions, performance year:
1,236.84 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year (market-based):
Weight in MTCO2e
Imported electricity 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Imported thermal energy 0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total gross Scope 2 GHG emissions, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Gross GHG emissions from biogenic sources, performance year:
0 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Does the GHG emissions inventory include Scope 3 emissions from the following sources?:
Yes or No Weight in MTCO2e
Business travel Yes 556.52 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Commuting Yes 703.18 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Purchased goods and services Yes 21.86 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Capital goods No ---
Fuel- and energy-related activities not included in Scope 1 or Scope 2 Yes 432.68 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Waste generated in operations Yes 92.55 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent
Other sources --- 136.29 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

Total Scope 3 GHG emissions, performance year:
1,943.07 Metric tons of CO2 equivalent

A brief description of how the institution accounted for its Scope 3 emissions:

The College completes a commuter survey of the Catawba College community, uses primary source documents for utilities, recovers mileage traveled from receipts of reimbursed travel, gathers information from our study abroad inventory, and works with the College's waste utility to track operational waste to compute the Scope 3 projections in SIMAP.

The College is continuing to improve its record-keeping and ability to determine embedded emissions from purchased goods and operations.

Has the institution completed an inventory within the previous three years to quantify its air pollutant emissions?:
Yes

Annual weight of emissions for::
Weight of Emissions
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) 1.47 Tons
Sulfur oxides (SOx) 0.84 Tons
Carbon monoxide (CO) 3.65 Tons
Particulate matter (PM) 0.11 Tons
Ozone (O3) ---
Lead (Pb) ---
Hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) ---
Ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) ---
Other standard categories of air emissions identified in permits and/or regulations 0.36 Tons

Do the air pollutant emissions figures provided include the following sources?:
Yes or No
Major stationary sources No
Area sources No
Mobile sources Yes
Commuting Yes
Off-site electricity production Yes

A brief description of the methodology(ies) the institution used to complete its air emissions inventory:

Mobile source emissions for Catawba College's on-road fleet were calculated using Argonne National Laboratory's AFLEET 2023 Tool, which takes into consideration location, vehicle model year, estimated annual vehicle mileage and gallons of fuel (gasoline, diesel) used.

Commuting source emissions for Catawba College were calculated using the results of a campus-wide survey, assessing the commuting behavior of the College's students and employees. Air pollutant emissions were calculated using emissions factors from the AFLEET 2023 Tool, which takes into consideration location, the number of vehicles, and miles traveled.

Off-site electricity production emissions were determined using eGrid 2021 data.

More detail is provided in the attachment under "Additional documentation to support the submission."

All air pollutant emissions data is based on Fiscal Year 2023.
