Catawba College Day of Character

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
As a part of the College's new "Pillar Days" program, in which days throughout the academic year are devoted to one of Catawba's Four Pillars (Scholarship, Character, Culture, and Service), the Day of Character was held on February 21, 2024.

All members of the campus community had the opportunity to engage with several activities throughout the day on different aspects of character, structured around the United Nations Sustainable Development goals and with a focus on collective action and common purpose. Activities included:
- Visits to local parks to examine and discuss different aspects of accessibility for all people
- A Lunch and Learn event with Dr. Donovan Livingston, an educator, poet, and public speaker
- Character Competition: a debate-style competition in which participants discussed specific ethics-related and character-related cases, including the aesthetic character of neighborhoods, land development conflicts and sustainable development, workers' rights, and animal welfare.
- Several physical activities, including mindfulness yoga, pickleball, kickball, and disc golf
- Several other activities, including a Climate Action Walk, a Low Ropes Course Character Challenge, and more.
