Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
The College has intensified its focus in the 23-24 academic year on service through the addition of Pillar Days and a strategy from the athletics office. The College requires that all student-athletes complete at least 15 hours of service before the completion of the academic year. Additionally, the College has created four days within the academic calendar where students, faculty, and staff are to focus and participate in the cultivation of work related to our four pillars, being service, culture, character, and scholarship. The Day of Service was an institution-wide endeavor in Fall of 2023 and yielded great impact on the local Salisbury-Rowan community.
Catawba College maintains volunteer data through two central hubs: (i) Helper Helper, in coordination with our Athletics Department; and (ii) Presence, which is used by the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values. To calculate total volunteer numbers and volunteer hours, we calculated the total amount of all student service hours and the number of students recorded in Helper Helper and then sorted and eliminated duplicates from Presence before totaling service hours in Presence, which combined to reach the total. Data tracking can be made available upon request.
Catawba College engages a great deal of its campus community, including students and employees, with the Day of Service. On the first annual Day of Service, which was held on September 13th, 2023, the College worked with 23 community partners to serve the Rowan County community in a variety of ways, including local food bank and shelter support, park cleanups, tutoring and mentoring students, tree planting, senior citizen outreach, and more.
