Environmental Stewards Program:

Reinvigorated in 2023, the Environmental Stewards Program is a service-based environmental education and leadership program for students at Catawba College. The Environmental Stewards program helps the College to sustain a dynamic community of learners and seeks to unite a diverse population of students, faculty and staff as active co-participants in scholarship and service. Stewards are awarded financial support and are expected to create student serving education-based sustainability projects throughout their time in the program.

The vision that drives the Environmental Stewards Service Scholarship Program is that service and commitment to environmental stewardship are vital to the complete education of our future leaders. Through the Environmental Stewards Service Scholarship Program, Catawba College enables talented and committed students to develop as community leaders with the skills necessary to create positive change in their present and future communities.

Environmental Stewards are student leaders who wish to make a greater commitment to environmental stewardship and work with the Catawba College Center for the Environment to make the Center’s ambitious educational efforts even better.

The Environmental Stewards Program is a peer educators program, but also provides the opportunity for individual service and project creation. Examples of programs run and projects completed by Stewards include:
- Conducting Zero-Waste events for athletics, student life, and more by collecting and sorting waste while simultaneously engaging campus community members on issues of consumption
- Giving tours of the Fred Stanback Jr. Ecological Preserve for students and other members of the campus community, highlighting several ecological features and interactions that are present on the College's campus
- Conducting a Food Waste Audit in the College's Dining Hall in order to understand how much food is being wasted. While collecting food waste, the Stewards engage and interview students and employees alike on the causes and effects of food waste
- Holding SDG Movie Nights for all students to learn more, and engage with each other, about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of a series of movies, which are screened in the Center for the Environment building
- Designing and planting several native gardens across the College's campus, providing the opportunity for the campus community to learn more about the benefits of native plants and sustainable landscape design
