A brief description of the institution’s third party certified land holdings:
The entire Pittsburgh campus has been registered as an Arboretum, with the size totaling 122 acres, consisting of more than 3,000 trees representing 152 different species.
In 2024, Carnegie Mellon renewed its Arboretum Accreditation Level 1 from ArbNet, an international collaborative of professionals that assists arboreta in meeting environmental goals and raising environmental standards through the ArbNet accreditation program.

Each year since 2014, Carnegie Mellon has received the Tree Campus Higher Education designation from the Tree Campus Higher Education program of the Arbor Day Foundation. This program assists colleges and universities in developing sustainable arboretums.
