1st campaign
A brief description of the campaign:
Carnegie Mellon University has participated annually in the Campus Race to Zero Waste (CR2ZW) since its inception as RecycleMania.
CR2ZW is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for colleges and universities to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period, CMU tracks the weights of how much we throw out, how much food we donate, and how much we recycle. With the goal of increasing our diversion and recycling rates throughout the competition!
In addition to benchmarking the university's waste reduction efforts, we educate the campus community about waste minimization. Activities are planned for each of the 8 weeks of the competition including tabling, workshops, challenges, and events.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Programing for CR2ZW is run by a group of students. They gain leadership and planning skills. Activities are well attended and some of the annual activities are looked forwarded to each year. Waste diversion data is tracked and shared with the campus community to inspire them to increase recycling and composting habits throughout the eight weeks (and beyond!).
Carnegie Mellon's annual CR2ZW results are shared at the bottom of this page: https://www.cmu.edu/environment/recycling-waste/cr2zw.html

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The Scotty Goes Green (SGG) certification programs provide the CMU community with resources and guidance on making sustainable choices and taking sustainable actions.
Reasons to participate:
- Learn about campus sustainability resources
- Gain tools to educate your coworkers, colleagues, classmates, roommates, and more about sustainability
- Connect with others on campus working toward a more sustainable future
- Earn recognition and bragging rights
- Share best practices
The first certification program, the SGG Workplace Certification, is a voluntary, self-guided review of office practices and employee behaviors as well as an opportunity to learn more about sustainability. We aim to establish a network of sustainability-literate employees to serve as leaders and to educate their peers on campus resources and practices while increasing campus sustainability practices.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
The initial Scotty Goes Green Office Certification launched in the fall of 2014 and over 700 people signed onto the program within 33 administrative & academic departments. The updated program, Scotty Goes Green Workplace Certification, soft-launched in 2024 and has had four workplaces certify under the new checklist. We are planning to expand to the entire campus in 2025.
