Research Inventory
Inventory of the institution’s sustainability research:
A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
CMU's Sustainability Initiative maintains a Tableau dashboard that maps faculty members to the UN SDGs. In 2023, the Sustainability Initiative partnered with campus colleagues to develop a system that automatically updates faculty profiles at scholars.cmu.edu, while also providing an opportunity for faculty to review and update their top SDGs.
To increase engagement with and accuracy of the Tableau dashboard, the Sustainability Initiative team took a systematic approach to verify that the SDGs recorded in the Tableau were accurate in a process led by a student intern. The data displayed are sourced directly from the Elements database where faculty identify their priority SDGs on their profile. Additionally, outreach also engaged departments in a dialogue about how their work can be viewed using an expansive definition of sustainability embedded in the framework of the SDGs. Detailed information about this approach is included in CMU's 2023 Voluntary University Review.
