Carnegie Mellon Green Practices is a member of Pittsburgh Climate Initiative's Higher Education Climate Consortium (HECC).
The Environmental Coordinator meets quarterly with local Sustainability Coordinators, organized by Sustainable Pittsburgh's Champions for Sustainability.
The Environmental Coordinator is a member of the SW PA Household Hazardous Waste Task Force, a partnership of non-profits, business, government and higher education working to keep household hazardous waste out of the waterways, landfills and back yards, by holding collection events and educating the community. Collected 2M lbs since 2002.
Carnegie Mellon Green Practices worked with the Allegheny Food Waste Composting Coalition to develop food composting in the region.
Carnegie Mellon meets with the Oakland Task Force Environment Committee to work several local projects.
-Designed and distributed Oakland ‘Green Guide’ 2008.
-Promote local food, the Oakland Farmers Market.
-Campaign to add more green space; community garden and trees.
-Increase recycling rates in the Oakland community.
-Reduce plastic bags: Received a grant for reusable shopping bags in 2008 & 2009 for all CMU, PITT & Carlow incoming freshman.
-Reduce bottled water consumption & add public water fountains.
-Promote energy efficient street lights for Oakland.
