Tier2-6: Sustainability Events

1. The Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research annually hosts a speaker series intended for students as the audience. The series' focus is to bring global and innovative sustainability ideas and progresses together to promote sustainability among the community.

In spring of 2010, the event was named Environmental Distinguished Lecture Series - Towards Sustainability and hosted the following list of lectures:

* February 3, 2010. "Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability: Design as Catalyser of Diffuse Creativity for Sustainable Changes", by Professor Ezio Manzini, Design and Innovation for Sustainability, Milan Polytechnic University, Italy. http://www.cmu.edu/uls/february/manzini.html

* Feb 4, 2010 . "The Moral and Political Challenges of Climate Change", by Dale Jamieson, Director of Environmental Education, New York university. http://www.cmu.edu/uls/february/jamieson.html

* March 30, 2010 ."Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Plastic: The Conflict over Safety between Scientists and Government Regulatory Agencies", by Professor Frederick Vom Saal,Department of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri, Columbia. http://www.cmu.edu/uls/march/saal.html

2. Additionally The Humanities Center organizes Carnegie Mellon International Film Festival, at which special environmental films are presented.

On March 25 to April 24, 2010, 14 award-winning films from more than eighteen countries were screened. The event included the following environmental films:

* The Age of Stupid (Great Britain, 2008)
* The Garden, Directed by Scott Hamilton Kennedy (US 2007)
* Sea Change, Directed by Barbara Ettinger (US 2009)

3. On Nov 13, 2009 the Steinbrenner Institute hosted Senator Robert Casey for a major address on climate change, where the senator outlined his plans for Pittsburgh's role as the nation responds to the challenges of climate change and seeks to achieve a clean energy economy.

4. The School of Computer Science also hosts its own "the Sustainability and Computer Science" seminar series. More information available at http://seminar.living-environments.net/

5. Other lecture series are frequent in other departments such as:

* On Sep 11,2009, Jaime Carbonell, Carnegie University addressed wind power energy technology with a lecture, "Wind Power: Optimization at All Levels".

* On March 19,2010, David Dzombak and Walter J. Blenko, Sr. Professors of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University, lectured on water quality regulations with a lecture, "Mississippi River Water Quality and the Clean Water Act: Progress, Challenges, Opportunities".
