Does the institution have sustainability-themed housing (residential floor or hall, or theme house) where residents learn about sustainability together and to which residents must apply?:
A brief description of the themed housing:
Carnegie Mellon University currently has two sustainability-themed residential halls where resident learn about sustainability practices.
Stever house:
Stever House is the first LEED silver-certified residence hall in the country (LEED Silver 2.1 2003) and as such focuses many of its programs and experiences on promoting environmentally-friendly practices. Traditions in Stever House include the Sir Stever competition, Halloween decorating, Mardi Gras Madness, and the Earth Day Celebration. Leadership development is also very important to the house with House Council members regularly interfacing with the RA staff to collaborate on a variety of community projects and initiatives. In addition, Stever House is the residential home to students in the Science and Humanities Scholars interdisciplinary program. Eco-Reps lead by the Housing & Dining Services promote sustainability among the residents.
Henderson House:
Henderson House, 60 bed co-ed residential house, was renovated for residents in the Fall 2003. The objective of the "Wellness Housing" is to add a holistic health promotion model to the traditional residence hall setting. The program is student-driven and will regularly solicit student input in all of its programmatic initiatives. Participants in the program agree to the following:
1.Establish a wellness-focused community environment in Henderson House.
2.Take advantage of health education initiatives and peer support opportunities provided in Henderson House and elsewhere on campus.
3.Participate in at least two health education opportunities per semester sponsored in Henderson House by students or staff.
4.Maintain a substance free (no alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs) environment in Henderson House for themselves and their guests.
Residents of Henderson house are required to sign an agreement indicating individual support of the Wellness program. Eco-Reps lead by the Housing & Dining Services promote sustainability among the residents.
