Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Waste and Recycling Mobile App

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Carleton University has set strategic goals towards zero waste. A key element of this program as identified within the Sustainability Plan, is to decrease contamination and engage the university in waste diversion goals. Carleton also recognized that a number of our students are from outside the National Capital Region (Ottawa and Surrounding) and from Overseas. This means that many community users are not familiar with the on-site and city recycling programs in place.

Carleton worked with a third party to develop a waste look up app (Waste Wizard) which is available both on our website (https://carleton.ca/sustainability/app/wastewizard/) and on the Carleton University mobile app. This App allows community members who are having problems knowing where waste goes to use the digital tool, as an easy way to search for how to dispose of anything, including where to drop it off, or if it cannot go into a recycling container or landfill.

The search tool, provides key information on the best option for recycling, compost or landfill, and can also provide location information for waste streams such as e-waste. If the product is not available to look up, users can also recommend an item for inclusion.

The Waste Wizard App is also available in 13 languages, to ensure students from overseas can also interact with the tool. To date over 1200 items have been reviewed since 2020.
