The charter or mission statement of the CIR or other body which reflects social and environmental concerns or a brief description of how the CIR is tasked to address social and environmental concerns:
The Board of Governors of the university has the responsibility under the University Act to administer funds and make investments. The Board has established the Investment Management Committee of the Board to meet with the Investment Manager and reviews investment mandate, portfolio performance and responsible investing actions. The Investment Management Committee terms of reference and the Investment Policy are found on the university's website (links are shared below).

 

The Capilano University's Invesment Policy number B.201 includes Section 7 which sets out the requirements for Environment, Social, and Governance as follows:

The University supports and encourages its Manager(s) to incorporate ESG factors, along with other conventional analytical tools, when evaluating investment opportunities and risks. It should be noted that ESG factors are only one aspect of analysis and should not be used as an exclusionary screen to eliminate specific entities or sectors from consideration. Relevant ESG factors will vary by industry and should be applied appropriately to help assess both risk and return.

When selecting Managers, the Committee should consider how managers analyze and integrate ESG factors into their investment activities and determine if they are signatories of the United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Investing (UNPRI).

Manager(s) shall provide updates on ESG and/or Responsible Investment policies and initiatives on an annual basis.

David Ayriss, Investment Management Committee Chair:

David Ayriss is the Chair of the Capilano University Investment Committee and the Chair of Capilano University Foundation Board. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Ayriss served as the Vice-President and Pension Portfolio Manager, Institutions at Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel. Mr. Ayriss holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of British Columbia.

 

Ash Amlani, Chair of Board of Governors:

Ash Amlani is an engagement specialist working with communities and stakeholders to advance public policy. Ms. Amlani has a Masters in Public Health and a Bachelors of Science (honours) in biotechnology,

 

Paul Dangerfield:

Paul Dangerfield is the President and Vice Chancellor of Capilano University. Mr. Dangerfield has a Bachelor Science in Chemistry and an Masters Business Administration with a specilization in leadership.

 

Yuri Fulmer:

Yuri Fulmer is the Chancellor of Capilano Univesity and the owner of Fulmer & Company which owns and invests in a group of companies in the hospitality, business-to-business, manufacturing, construction, digital technology and consumer service industries. Mr. Fulmer received the BC Community Achievement Award and The Order of British Columbia in 2010 for his dynamic entrepreneurship and committed volunteerism.

 

Shreya Maglani, Student:

Shreya Maglani is a student in the Applied North American Business Management Program.

 

Sam Tecle, Academic Staff:

Sam Tecle is a faculty member in the School of Legal Studies, teaching Advocacy. He is also a litigation lawyer at Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP and practices in the areas of commercial litigation, employment law, and professional liability.

 

Rabjeet (RJ) Singh Walia, Alumni:

RJ is a lawyer with Meridian Law Group working in personal injury, commercial litigation, and insurance defence. RJ is a graduate of Capilano University with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

 

Mary-Ann Booth:

Mary-Ann Booth is a Director of the Capilano University's Foundation Board and is appointed by the Foundation Board to the Investment Management Committee to provide advice and guidance on investment matters relating to the Foundation investment portfolio. Ms. Booth served as the Mayor of West Vancouver from 2018 to 2022 after serving two terms on Council from 2011 to 2018. She has also served as a school trustee with the West Vancouver Board of Education from 2005 to 2011, the last three years as Chair of the Board. Before her public service, she practiced law for 12 years, including positions as a provincial crown prosecutor and in-house corporate counsel.

 

Majid Raja, Academic Staff:

Majid Raja is a faculty member and Vice Chair of Graduate Programs in Capilano University's School of Business, where he teaches Strategy. Mr. Raja has a Masters in Business Adminstration and a Master in Science Operational Research.

Examples of CIR actions during the previous three years:

In 2021, the University retained the services of an investment consulting firm to provide specialized services to the Investment Management Committee of the board that includes strategy, risk assessment, implementation and investment monitoring services. The Investment Policy was updated in June 2023 to provide greater clarity and transparency on the investment goals and approaches. The Investment Management Committee terms of reference was also updated in November 2023 to ensure alignment with the updated investment policy.
