The entire BC Public Sector purchases offsets in the same way, with the Provincial Government of British Columbia's Climate Action Secretariat (CAS) sourcing verified emission reduction units and retiring them on the public sectors behalf. A brief description of when and why the GHG emissions baseline was adopted:
2007 was chosen as our baseline year since this was the first year that Capilano University completed a comprehensive GHG inventory as per the standardized methodology legislated by the Provincial Government of British Columbia for all public sector organizations.

A brief description of the institution’s GHG emissions reduction initiatives:
Capilano University has been an active participant in Energy Conservation since 2007. During this period, the amount of work to reduce GHG emissions has been extensive. For the past few years, we have been studying, reporting and developing an electrification plan that will address the additional load from new construction and the electrification of existing buildings. One key strategy for reducing emissions is electrification of space heating during the shoulder seasons. For each building electrified, 65-75% reductions are possible above and beyond the approximate 48% reduction already achieved through conservation. Fortuitously, this strategy also adds cooling that will prevent buildings from succumbing to climate change during the few periods where extreme weather occurs during the Fall and Summer academic semesters.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
Performance Year: It is acknowledged that the data for performance year is sourced for 2021. However, this reflects the most recent available data for GHG emissions. For future STARS submissions, the institution will endeavor to provide more current performance year data, typically from the year prior to submission.
Capilano University: Our Committment Capilano University is accountable to our community; our commitment to, and demonstration of, environmental stewardship is an example for others within our community. Our mission statement emphasizes our commitment to the 'establishment of policies and procedures that reflect the best standards of environmental stewardship’. Our daily business practices reinforce our commitment to managing our resources for the benefit of present and future generations. Capilano University will strive to become a model environmentally responsible institution and will actively promote environmentally sustainable behaviours among our students, staff, faculty, administration, and the broader community that is Capilano University.
Personnel Counts:
The software used for tracking employee and student headcounts and FTE did not extend back to 2007. Therefore, data for the 2007 baseline have been estimated based upon available information.
- 2007 Employee FTE - 688 spanning all campuses. NV estimated to account for 90% of employee FTE = 619 FTE estimate.
