A brief description of the institution’s community garden:
Capilano University hosts a shared community garden that is accessible to the campus community as well as neighbors, the childcare facility, parents and the Indigenous Center, etc. The community garden promotes the learning and use of sustainable practices as well as an awareness of local and global issues facing food security. These principals are built into the educational curriculum whereby students of particular degree programs can gain hands on experience in food grown and biological practices. Additionally the intent of the community garden is to promote an educational, recreational and community space available to all.
Capilano University’s community garden recognizes community gardening and other forms of urban
agriculture as an important educational and recreational activity that can contribute to increased food
security, community development, campus space enhancement, environmental sustainability and social
inclusion.
