(1) Vietnam - Canada Conference 2023 at Tra Vinh University in Vietnam: CapU International presented on "Sustainability in the Context of Internationalization in Education".

(2) BCCIE Conference 2023: CapU International co-presented on "Uniting for Sustainability: EDI and SDG Frameworks in Global HEIs​" with CapU's international partner VIA University College (Denmark) and local partner, University Mobility Asia Pacific (Canada).

(3) BCCIE Summer Conference 2021: CapU International and School of Motion Picture Arts co-presented on "Arms Across the Atlantic: ​The Global Sustainability Film Project" with CapU's international partner VIA University College (Denmark), highlighting a Collaborative Online International Learning sustainability project between CapU and VIA film students who created sustaianability-themed short term films - this project was recognized by the PIEoneer Awards 2022 in London, UK as a highly commended finalist under the "Progressive Education Delivery" category.

(4) SDG Week Canada 2024: Canada-wide in-person and virtual conference from March 4-8, 2024 featuring workshops, panels, and other interactive programming to increase awareness of and engagement with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on university and college campuses. Presentations included:

 

- Need for environmental education—Panel discussion by Enactus Capilano: Organized by Enactus Capilano’s sustainability team, four projects will be displayed along with a panel discussion on the need for environmental education with Pankaj Bagga, Yasmin Dibai and Jane Raycraft.

- North Vancouver’s Climate and Environment Strategy work & the Urban Forest Plan project: Representatives from the City of North Vancouver will be speaking about the Climate and Environment Strategy and the Urban Forest Plan.

- Achieving SDGs through biodiversity conservation in the Howe Sound Biosphere by Tom Flower: In this seminar, Tom Flower explores what biodiversity is, why it has value and how we at CapU are helping to reach our national commitment by using UN Sustainable Development Goals to guide biodiversity conservation in the Howe Sound Biosphere.

CapU International / Global Engagement team has shared a draft case study with Universities Canada's Action for Net Zero climate initiative. We are now in the process of finalizing the case study / project, which has to do with helping to offest carbon emissions of last year's Vietnam Field School 2023, which engaged 22 CapU students, including 50%+ underrepresented students, led by two CapU faculty leaders and one CapU staff.

 

In March 2024, CAPU Enactus presented their social enterprise case studies to the ENACTUS Canada Western Exhibition in three categories:

- TD Entrepreneurship Challenge

- Desjardins Youth Empowerment Challenge

- Enactus Canada Alumni Innovation and Impact Challenge.

 

Through rounds of live, presentation-based competitions, CAPU ENACTUS were awarded the Regional Runner Up in the below categories:

 

- TD Entrepreneurship Challenge

- Desjardins Youth Empowerment Challenge

A brief description of other inter-campus collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year :
(1) A Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) project between students at CapU and students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) in Scotland, led by their respective faculty (underway and to be completed by May 2024). The project design supports UN SDG #4: Quality Education and UN SDG #10; Reducing Inequalities. Thematically, it addresses UN SDG #14: Life Above Water with a question of "How Can Tourism Contribute to Achieving SDG14?";

 

(2) Enhancing the existing partnership between VIA University College in Denmark and CapU as part of the FIlmEU alliance (filmeu.eu), which aims to transform learning and teaching and build bridges between institutions and countries, and which has as one of its core valuaes sustainability, especially around UN SGD #17: Partnership for Goals, and diversity and inclusion. 

 

(3) Ongoing exploration with CapU's international exchange partners around developing international projects steeped in UN SDGs.

 

(4) CapU's Vietnam Field School 2023 involved collaborating with Hanoi Open University (HOU) in Vietnam to connect CapU students and HOU students through a cultural activity as part of the field school. Currently, working with HOU on two on-campus tree planting events - one at CapU and one at HOU - that aim to help offset the carbon emissions of last year's Vietnam Field School.
