A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society (HSBRIS) and CapU have a formal partnership that was established in 2021. CapU’s partnership with HSBRIS involves all academic faculties, the Office of Indigenous Affairs and Education and the Office of Creative Activity, Research and Scholarship at the University. The partnership creates new opportunities for research and course-based undergraduate project work that promotes sustainable development; biodiversity conservation; and reconciliation, equity and inclusion. Howe Sound-focused research projects connect students with local organizations that contribute toward biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Projects teams go out into the region collecting information, meeting with knowledge holders and learning about various challenges.
Through the HSBRIS partnership, faculty and students are funded to work on applied projects. Funding is provided via the grants awarded to CAPU from the federal government and utilized to support faculty and student salaries, materials. Funds are also used to support events and field trips in line with the partnership.

The work of the Community Development and Outreach Department (CDO) is an important way that Capilano University reaches out to those not served by campus based programs; those who are often socially excluded in many parts of our community. CDO learners are newcomers to Canada, low-income residents, parents, seniors, workers in entry level jobs, Indigenous people both on-reserve and off-reserve and people looking to make a positive change in their lives. CDO learners live in communities across our catchment area in urban areas, inner cities, small towns, and remote villages.
We support learning through upgrading opportunities, language development, student success strategies, community leadership and volunteerism.
Through the CDO, CAPU has partnerships with multiple community organizations, including North Shore Neighbourhood House, North Vancouver City Library, Impact North Shore, St. John Evangelical Anglican Church, Queen Mary elementary School, Ts'leil-Waututh Nation. Squamish Nation. Eslha7an Education and Training Centre, and many more.
Support for the CDO is provided via the below:
Paid Resources:
- Non-instructional Support:
- Approximately 9 sections covering program coordination, financial convening, workload coordination, administrative support, and project management. These roles are crucial for overseeing over 20 community programs.
- Instructional Support:
- 1.87 instructional sections supporting 11 Community Adult Literacy Programs (CALP).
- 8 instructional sections dedicated to the "Adult Dogwood" program at the Eslha7an Learning Centre in North Vancouver, providing Indigenous adult learners with a path to high school completion and upgrading.
- 8 instructional sections at the Carnegie Community Centre in Downtown Eastside.
- 3 sections supporting the CCB Community Capacity Building program.
Space:
- We also make use of a classroom at Shipyard Campus, twice a week for teaching and activities such as tutor training for community volunteers.
