Does the institution conduct an assessment of sustainability culture?:
Yes

Which of the following best describes the cultural assessment? The assessment is administered to::
A subset of the campus community or a sample that may not be representative of the entire community

Which of the following best describes the structure of the cultural assessment? The assessment is administered::
Without a follow-up assessment of the same cohort or representative samples of the same population

A brief description of how and when the cultural assessment(s) were developed and/or adopted:
The most recent Climate Justice Survey was completed in 2024 to sample student awareness and attitudes relating to sustainability on campus. The survey was conducted by CSU ambassadors who sampled student responses in person. This was conducted by circulating the student population and completing the survey using tablets. The survey only sampled students and only a sample of students who were willing to provide a response.

An additional climate justice survey was completed following the 2021/2022 sustainability campaign. This survey was emailed to students to provide responses. Again the survey focused only on students and collected data from students willing to participate.

In future, the surveys are intended to be annual with consistent questioning to enable data comparison. Historically however, the surveys have been completed in isolation, generally on an annual basis to support specific campaigns and programming.

A brief description of how representative samples were reached (if applicable) and how the cultural assessment is administered:

As detailed above, the survey reflects students willing to participate in the survey. the survey was not directed towards specific student groups, rather any students willing to paticipate. Data was collected in person by ambassadors using mobile tablets.

A brief summary of results from the cultural assessment:

The results from the survey were compiled into a report and presented to the Student Engagement Committee. The results indicated a general understanding that the organization is making sufficient efforts to combat climate change, however more transparency on specific measures is required. Additionally, students indicated a general interest to become more directly involved in the efforts implemented by the institution.

The results also included a series of suggestions for additional sustainability measures, including:

  • Greater public transport accessibility

  • Open Education Resource use

  • Greater promotion and sharing of existing sustainability initiatives

  • Improved waste recycling and less 'single use' (plastic) cuttlery dependency
