Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
1) Field Schools - The CAPU Field schools provide the opportunity for students to gain credit while addressing real-world challenges in the field. Field schools vary in location, but have included locations such as the UK, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Hungary, lasting between 2-5 weeks. Of particular note is the Vietnam Field School - a multi year, sustainability focused, community based tourism initiative. Students enrolled onto the Field School engage with Indigenous Communities and Tourism Social Enterprizes to develop an understanding of the social and environmental impact of global tourism on local communities. This included the opportunity to have a community dialogue session with one of the last remaining Indigenous floating / fishing communities in Ha Long Bay and learn first-hand about the environmental impact of global tourism. As part of the experience, students are provided the opportunity to develop micro-projects based on their learning. Examples of projects developed include an environmental and social impact assessment of the Ha Long Bay biosphere region, a carbon offset project (further discussed in the innovation section) and a website development project to help connect (and provide more economic opportunity to) homestay communities and prospective tourists. 2. Enactus - Enactus is a global non-profit organization with teams in over 1,730 universities in 37 countries with over 72,000 members. Enactus teams work to identify challenges in their communities and develop innovative solutions that are in line with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. These student-led teams then run their projects in their community with the goal of bettering the lives of as many individuals as possible. CAPU Enactus is currently engaged in two primary projects: U-Belong - A social engagement and mental wellbeing program aimed at creating a sense of belonging to the CAPU Community and addressing other issues such as racial inequality, gender disparity, and self-acceptance. Square One - A community initiative aimed at improving financial literacy within local Secondary School students. 3. WIL (work integrated learning) coordinates student/community partnership projects for on-campus and off-campus parties targeting sustainability-related issues. Examples include a Partnership with North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce seeking assitance from Tourism program students to develop a climate change mitagation package for local small business' to incorporate into daily operations. Duration: approx 2 months. |
