A degree in tourism management broadens your understanding of the global issues, impacts and challenges facing the tourism industry and prepares you to be effective in complex decision-making situations.

 

CapU is passionate about the delicate and thriving hospitality and tourism management industry in beautiful British Columbia as we welcome so many students from across the country and worldwide.

 

Courses emphasize sustainability, community engagement, global consciousness and experiential learning with elective course options to earn hotel and resort management or adventure tourism concentrations.

Build your own program with a mix of arts, sciences and humanities courses in the Associate of Arts degree program at CapU. Your choices can include everything from mathematics and computing science to business, creative and performing arts, the social sciences or humanities.


 


A curated list of select courses for the Associate of Arts Degree — including those focused on the environment and sustainability — will be offered at the CapU Squamish campus for the Fall 2024 term.


 


While flexible in its approach, this Associate Degree contains a number of the sustainability focused (and sustainability inclusive) social sciences and humanities courses listed within the AC01 course inventory (e.g Geography and Sociology). Due to its customizable nature, not every student graduating from this program will have an equal understanding of sustainability, however the courses are available to graduate with a strong foundational knowledge of contemporary global challenges. Consequently the program has been included for this credit.

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
Develop a strong background in research, with hands-on lab experience, practical field work, and collaboration with community partners to access in-demand jobs and prepare for post-graduate school study. Bachelor of Science students customize their degree by choosing a concentration. We offer concentrations in three areas of study: biomedical sciences, computational sciences and environmental sciences.

 

This program has been added due to its ability to specialist in Environmental Sciences and for it's requirement to undertake required sustainability focused courses, such as the foundational course; Making Change: Regional Research and Action. The following electives can be chosen from a wide range of courses including many of the sustainably focused (and inclusive) courses listed within the AC01 inventory. Consequently it has been included within this credit.

Minor in Interdiciplinary Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
This 24-credit minor is comprised of three Interdisciplinary Studies courses along with a customizable mix of courses within the Faculty of Arts & Sciences, which includes the schools of Humanities, STEM, and Social Sciences.

 

The minor includes an understanding of sustainability via the below mandatory sustainably focused courses:

 

Grand Challenges - An interdisciplinary Approach: Interdisciplinary teams of researchers are working together to solve the twenty-first century's grand challenges. Whether tackling declining biodiversity or building sustainable cities, the solutions require cooperation between universities and the wider community. This project-based course will integrate local community partners to explore and propose solutions to regional issues, such as affordable housing, green transportation, and resource development. In the process students will learn about workplace opportunities where their skills and perspective will be valued

 

Reconciliation in Action: This course invites students to engage in the process of advancing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Engaging with the work and teachings of Elders, Indigenous scholars, cultural experts, and Indigenous communities, students will examine the process of reconciliation within the context of past and ongoing processes of settler colonialism, including residential schools and genocide committed against Indigenous people.

Minor in Sociology

Graduates from sociology programs are well-equipped to start careers in law, business, education, social work and more.

 

You can take a mix of sociology and criminology courses, giving you the opportunity to tackle subjects including concepts and theories of society, social and global issues, the role of media in society, consumer culture, law, inequality and justice.

 

You’ll develop and refine your skills in multicultural awareness, critical thinking and expressing ideas clearly. You’ll also take part in experiential learning opportunities and community-based research projects.
