A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
The total course offering was provided by the Registrar's Office. This included all courses offered to students during the previous academic year (vs a total course catalogue). Courses were only counted once, regardless of whether they were taught by multiple departments, or multiple times across the year.
Sustainability course offerings were determined by reviewing the course information available online. Each course title, course outline and learning objectives were reviewed to determine those to be categorized as Sustainability-inclusive, Sustainability-focused and non-sustainable/excluded. For validation, a 'sustainabilty' word search was completed and the sustainability course offerings reviewed by another project team member.
Given the practical nature of a large portion of the university programs, particularly those within the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, a number of courses were excluded. These exclusions were conducted on the basis of the guidance included in AC01, namely:
- Self directed studies and practicums,
- Foundational Adult Learning Skills
- Study Abroad opportunities
- Clinical or physical education practical courses
- Arts, technical, composition and performance based courses
- Wilderness leadership and practical skills courses (eg kayaking)
A total of 893 courses were excluded on the above basis.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
