Canadore College offers a range of programs and initiatives through its Student Success Services to support students with disabilities and promote their academic success. These services are designed to guide students through their studies and ensure that they have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Student Success Services includes:

  • Accessible Learning Services: Provides accommodations and support to ensure equitable access to education.
  • Testing: Facilitates accommodations and support for students requiring special arrangements during exams.
  • Peer Tutoring: Offers tutoring support to help students with disabilities succeed in their coursework.
  • Mental Health Services: Provides counseling and mental health support to address emotional and psychological needs.
  • Summer Transition: Assists students in transitioning to college life and academic demands.
  • Light Therapy: Supports students with conditions affected by light sensitivity.
  • Comfort Room: Offers a quiet space for relaxation and stress relief.
  • Student Success Blogs: Provides information and tips to help students navigate their academic journey.

Canadore College welcomes approximately 700 Indigenous learners annually to its three campuses in North Bay and Parry Sound. The North Bay campuses are situated on the traditional territory of Nipissing First Nation and lands protected by the Robinson-Huron Treaty of 1850, while the Parry Sound campus is located on the traditional territory of Wasauksing.

Indigenous Learners at Canadore College:

  • Enrollment and Attendance: Over half of these learners attend programs on-campus, while others study through Indigenous partner campuses or earn credentials within their home communities. Many Indigenous students opt for part-time learning paths.
  • Diverse Representation: Nearly 20 percent of Canadore’s total on-campus student population celebrates Indigenous heritage from various nations.

Support and Initiatives:

  1. First Peoples’ Centre:

    • Provides comprehensive cultural and academic support for Indigenous learners at Canadore.
    • Engages in recruitment, promotion, and community outreach projects to extend support beyond campus.

Canadore College is dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ students through a range of initiatives and services. The Access and Inclusion office plays a crucial role in this support by connecting students to appropriate services both on and off campus and addressing any challenges or barriers they might face. Their goal is to help students achieve their personal and professional aspirations.

Key Programs and Initiatives:

  • Campus Support: The Access and Inclusion office assists with solutions for personal and professional challenges, facilitates campus celebrations, promotes events, and offers customized classroom presentations and workshops.
  • Preferred Name Requests: They also manage preferred name change requests to ensure students' identities are respected.
  • OUTLoud North Bay: Canadore College is a proud supporter of OUTLoud North Bay, which works to support the health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQA+ youth and allies in North Bay and surrounding communities through workshops, professional services, collaborations, and a safe space.

Youth in Care Bursary
Canadore College is helping to improve access to post-secondary education for youth placed in the care of the Canadian Children’s Aid Society through the Youth in Care Bursary. There are up to five bursaries per year to youth currently or formerly in foster care.

The college also offers discretionary or emergency bursaries that can be accessed throughout the academic school year. 

First Generation Services: 

  • A comfortable and welcoming place to ask questions in confidence about your personal or academic life
  • Individualized guidance, consultation and support for first generation students
  • Advice about personal, academic and career goals and/or financial concerns
  • An orientation to accessing services and resources
  • Access to peer tutoring, academic supports and learning strategies
  • Guidance in making community contacts and connections
  • Workshops/events tailored to the academic, financial, and social needs of first generation students
  • Opportunities for students to offer feedback to help enhance this initiative

The Indigenous Poverty Reduction Education Program (IPREP) incorporates a culturally inclusive, wholistic model with an education and career plan tailored to individual needs and goals. These customized culturally inclusive services are geared towards college programs that are in demand by employers and include a pre-college transition phase as well as mentorship, career and education mapping, customized culturally supportive services, tutoring, including services before, during and after program completion.

The IPREP Program assists with student retention and as a result, students have enhanced support in obtaining a college certificate, diploma, and sustainable employment.

Canadore’s Internationalization Strategy is being developed against the tumultuous backdrop of a global pandemic.

Our Mission is to harness, to the greatest extent possible, the benefits of holistic, authentic and ethical internationalization for Canadore College.

Canadore College, in collaboration with the World University Services of Canada (WUSC) participates in the Student Refugee Program (SRP), a Canada-wide initiative involving a network of institutions that host student refugee learners every year. Canadore College graduated first WUSC student and looking forward to welcome new students in the upcoming years.

Participation in initiatives such as the WUSC student refugee program is testament to Canadore’s commitment to reciprocity and development in all it’s international endeavours and engagements. WUSC is a Canadian non-profit organization working to create a better world for all young people. We bring together a diverse network of students, volunteers, schools, governments, and businesses who share this vision. Together, we foster youth-centered solutions for improved education, economic, and empowerment opportunities to overcome inequality and exclusion in over 15 countries across Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Canadore College is dedicated to taking action in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) to minimize systemic obstacles and foster a more embracing and equitable environment for all applicants and students.  Our commitment to action is a conscious decision to promote respectful communication and outreach with all applicants.  It is our collective responsibility to inspire anti-oppressive practices that embrace innovation and recognize the significance of diversity to accomplish sustainable and significant change.

Youth in Care Bursary

Canadore College’s Office of Access and Inclusion (OAI) is at the forefront of efforts to dismantle barriers for students facing hurdles due to past criminal records. Partnering with organizations like the John Howard Society of Sudbury (JHS), they are pioneering new pathways through the Record Suspension Program, offering life-changing opportunities for those striving to build brighter futures.

The college also offers a Digital Anti-Racism Education Workshop along with Indigenous cultural training which includes:

  • Biigiiweyan Training: the training program presents cultural safety competencies including the knowledge of skills and behaviours needed to required to practice in a culturally safe fashion. 
  • Truth and Reconciliation Training
  • Significance of land training. 

The college has also brought in external guest speakers to teach cultural mindfulness.
