Canadore College's sustainability efforts are led by the Sustainable Development Task Force, which is key to the institution’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2031. The task force represents a diverse, multidisciplinary team that includes members from student government, senior administration, support staff, faculty, and other areas of the college. This diversity is intentional, reflecting the institution's commitment to inclusivity and its mission of integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its core operations.

The task force, co-chaired by Shawn Chorney (Vice President, Strategic Infrastructure, Indigenous and Learner Services) and Jesse Russell (Project Leader, Sustainable Development), meets quarterly to discuss projects and share ideas. It has been instrumental in driving initiatives that align with the college's mission of achieving carbon neutrality by 2031. 

This group is essential in guiding the college’s sustainability initiatives and can be seen as a key driver behind programs and projects that align with Canadore’s vision of creating a carbon-neutral, SDG-aligned future.

Jesse Russell is the Project Leader for Sustainable Development at Canadore College, where he co-chairs the Sustainable Development Task Force. He leads efforts to integrate sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the institution. His diverse portfolio includes domestic and international projects focused on carbon and waste reduction, food and water security, and land management. Jesse also oversees GHG monitoring and reduction strategies at a strategic level, ensuring alignment with the college’s carbon neutrality goals. Additionally, he plays a key role in securing grant funding to support sustainability initiatives and drive impactful change.

Jason Chirico is the Coordinator of Sustainable Initiatives at Canadore College, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the college’s sustainability projects. He plays a crucial role in managing key initiatives, including the water treatment and food production sites, where he is specifically trained in their operation. Jason ensures that these sites run efficiently and in alignment with the college's sustainability goals, contributing to efforts in environmental stewardship and resource management.

Description of each sustainability office:

At Canadore College, sustainability initiatives are supported by several dedicated sites across the campus. The official offices are located in close proximity to Organizational Development and Talent Management (HR), Health and Safety, Research Centre, Infrastructure, Finance, and the President's Office. Sustainabiity projects span across all campuses. 

The sustainability office also manages the following facilities: 

Clean Water Demonstration Site: This facility features a scaled version of a water treatment system equipped with SCADA technology, integral to the Clean Water Initiative. It demonstrates advanced water treatment processes and sustainability practices.

Indoor Growing Units: The college operates two solar-supported indoor growing units. One focuses on vertical hydroponics, while the other, a larger space, utilizes both soil and hydroponic methods. These units are designed to advance sustainable food production practices and utilize renewable energy.

The Living Sustainability Centre has successful launched a number of projects aimed at reducing Canadore's carbon footprint and integrating the SDGs across the institution.

These initiatives can be found here and can be filtered by contributing SDG or pillars to the sustainability plan which are: Operations, People, Outreach and Community Collaboration, and Research and Curriculum Development. 

Notable Accomplishments:

  • Selected twice by Colleges and Institutes Canada as national living lab demonstration site. 
  • Recognized as Watershed Heroes by local Conservation Authority. 
  • International Green Gown Award Finalists in Nature Positive category. 
  • Winners of ImpAct-Climate Challenge in medium-large institution category. 
  • First post-secondary institution in Canada to achieve Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certifications. 
  • Presenter at national and international conferences. 
  • Awarded grant funding in projects relating to active transportation, living lab projects, and to implement technology solutions for nature. 
  • Awarded Queen Elizabeth Scholar Grant in 2024 to provide opportunity for students to engage in sustainable development in Costa Rica.
