Narrative and/or website URL providing an overview of the innovation:

Canadore College has always been committed to fostering sustainability and creating impactful opportunities for its students. In alignment with this vision, the College recently purchased a farm, now known as Farm 17, to deepen its dedication to sustainable development and experiential learning.

This project is a collaboration with Green Communities Costa Rica, an organization based in the cloud-forested mountains of the Los Santos region. Green Communities is a beacon of sustainable development, transforming traditional coffee farms into organic ones while promoting environmental restoration and economic growth. When the program began, Green Communities had successfully converted 16 farms, but the vision for change inspired Canadore College to take an even more active role by investing in the 17th farm.

Farm 17 represents a shared commitment to sustainability, offering students hands-on opportunities to work within a global context and understand the interconnectedness of environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic development. By engaging directly in projects like organic coffee farming, students learn to apply the principles of sustainability in real-world contexts and bring these lessons back to their communities.

We began this journey with the launch of Farm 17 Sustainable Coffee Co., a project rooted in sustainability and innovation. Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to expand this initiative by constructing an outdoor classroom that will not only support the infrastructure needs of Green Communities Costa Rica but also provide an extraordinary learning environment for students from around the world. This space will serve as a hub for research, collaboration, and experiential learning, enhancing curriculum capacity and fostering deeper engagement with sustainable practices.
