9.1 Inter-campus collaboration for sustainability

Does the institution participate in one or more sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions?:
Yes

Description of the institution’s participation in sustainability-focused networks for educational institutions:

Colleges and Institutes Canada: The college participates in a number of their working groups as part of the nationwide ImpAct-Climate project. 

  • Community of Practice: working group dedicated to promoting the SDGs on campus. 
  • Scope 3 Working Group: dedicated to account for and reducing scope 3 emissions. 
  • ImpAct Climate Campus Living Labs: annual network of demonstration sites to promote a campus Living Lab. Canadore was one of two institutions selected two years consecutively. 

SDG Accord: The SDG Accord is an international accord and opportunity to inspire, celebrate and advance the important role that education plays in advancing and promoting the SDGs. 

Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals: they are dedicated to supporting sustainability personnel across post-secondary education in Ontario.

Narrative outlining how the institution formally shares its sustainability experiences and lessons learned with other institutions:

A key requirement of the Accord is to openly and annually account for progress and to share Canadore's experience and learning from implementing the SDGs through selected projects. The reports offer an annual overview of higher education's global contributions to the SDGs. Canadore submitted its first SDG Accord report in  2022, contributing to the 2023 Annual Report, which was presented at the UN High-Level Political Forum, with Canadore listed as a signatory.

SDG Accord

The projects associated with the ImpAct-Climate Campus Living Lab project with Colleges and Institutes Canada requires for institutions to make the information of their projects publically available.

  • Cohort 1 Project - Canadore was selected as a national living lab for a sustainable food production project using its solar supported grow pod. The initiative aimed to reduce fossil fuel reliance, improve fresh produce access for rural and Indigenous communities, and raise awareness, achieving 800,000+ social media impressions and national media coverage.
  • Cohort 2 Project - For the second consecutive year, Canadore was selected as a national living lab. From May 2023 to April 2024, the project focused on managing 460 forested acres, achieving FSC and SFI certifications, increasing tree count, and engaging the community through events, data collection, and carbon sequestration efforts.

Does the institution have a sustainability-focused articulation/transfer agreement that provides students who are studying sustainability at one institution with a formal pathway to another institution?:
Yes

Description of institution’s sustainability-focused articulation/transfer agreements:

Canadore College fosters student mobility through robust transfer agreements, enabling seamless credit transfers and academic pathways. These partnerships with institutions worldwide provide students with diverse opportunities to advance their education, gain global experiences, and achieve their academic and career goals efficiently while minimizing duplication of coursework and time to graduation.

As shown in the document linked here, Canadore offers pathways to gain advanced standing in a number of programs. 

An example of this is highlighted on page 20: Students from Canadore’s Environmental Technology program can transfer into Nipissing University’s Bachelor of Science – Honours  Specialization in Biology, or Environmental Biology and Technology program, with 69 of the 120 required credits already completed. Graduates earn both an Advanced Ontario College Diploma and an Honours University Degree.

Description of the institution’s sustainability mentoring activities:

Canadore has signed an MOU to collaborate with Green Gown Award Winners Dawson College to share best practices to help promote sustainability at their campuses. 

Canadore partnered with Cementation Americas as a mentor to advance climate change and mitigation strategies and to implement sustainable practices in their office buildings. 

Sustainable Canadore has also presented at 2 national and one provincial conference in 2023-2024.

  • FMO Symposium to discuss food security work with hydroponic grow pod. 
  • National Indigenous Education to discuss Clean Water Initiative which seeks to empower and support water sovereignty for Indigenous communities. 
  • CICan Connection Conference to present on partnership with Dawson College and The Village at Canadore. The presentation with Dawson College highlighted the partnership between both institutions while the presentation on the The Village demonstrated how Canadore is helping to reduce isolation amongst seniors within the region by connecting them with programming and students at the college.

Description of the institution’s leadership roles in inter-campus collaboration:

As part of their ImpAct-Climate Project, Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) put a call out for colleges and institutes to develop living lab projects that demonstrate ways to implement GHG emission reductions in areas that include:

  • Food
  • Waste
  • Transportation
  • Green Building / Landscape
  • Indigenous Knowledge and Practices
